This book tells the story of Colton Burpo and his supposed trip to Heaven. He gets sick and after a round of doctors, needs an emergency appendectomy. After his surgery he begins telling various things that happened while he was visiting Heaven.
There are many other similar stories that tell of near-death experiences and this one is not very different other than it was a young child telling the story. My major concern is how many times he says something and Todd Burpo, Colton’s father says he could have never heard that before unless he had been in heaven. The problem is that Todd is a minister in the Methodist Church. The child of a minister hears far more lessons and Biblical discussions than the average person. Even if he is only four years old, it is very likely that he had heard many of the things that his dad said he had not heard. This may not seem like that much of a concern, but was a red flag for me.
Another concern is that there are certain things in this story that don’t align with what the Bible says. If it comes down to believing what this book says or what the Bible says, I will stick with the Bible every time.
As far as the story, it is a very inspirational and perhaps motivational story. This family overcame many obstacles and was able to maintain their faith in God. If you like stories of hope then this might be a good book for you, but I would recommend getting your theology from the Bible and not this book.
