If you like to make your brain hurt, then Bend Your Brain is for you! The puzzles in this book are designed to work on different areas of your brain and to help with problem solving, memory, and to reduce stress (Although working on some of the puzzles might add to your stress level).

Many of these puzzles will take a while to solve. You will find yourself looking and re-looking at them numerous times to see if you might have missed something. They are all solvable, but most will take a while and they range from fairly easy to crazy.

This is a fun book if you like to challenge your brain or your friends. Give it a try and see how many you can solve. Click the link below to read more about Bend Your Brain or to purchase it.

NIV College Devotional Bible

I had very different expectations about this Bible before I received it. I did expect it to be hardback which seems strange to me. Being designed for college students who already have a lot of books to tote around, adding a few pounds in the form of a clunky Bible is not likely to happen. It is very bulky and takes up a lot of space.

Once you open it up, it is a fairly readable text with the exception of its color. The text in this edition is a dark shade of blue. This might not be an issue for many, but for me the contrast between the white pages and the blue text seemed a little hard to read.

As for the actual devotional parts of this Bible, they seemed to be lacking as well. It is not a typical “study” Bible with information on every page. This was fine and I really liked that aspect, but the devotional thoughts did not live up to a college level. First, their placement was not very helpful. It is not a major issue but it would be nice to have the devotional thought on the same page as the reading in the text it deals with. In some cases they are separated by a page or two. This is an easy fix in layout design and makes it a little more difficult to focus on the text and the devotional reading given.

I also felt like the devotional thoughts overall were not on a level that would be suitable for college aged people. Most of them were more on the level of high school or even some middle school. They are basically a story that can slightly be related to a verse or section of scripture with a few questions at the end. For a Bible aimed at a college age group, it would be nice to see something that got a little deeper into the text and that would challenge them more.

If you are looking for a Bible for yourself or your college aged child, I would not recommend this one.

Fiddler on the Roof

This is a play I have wanted to read for a long time and finally got around to it. I am glad that I did. This particular version is  a release designed to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of the Broadway premiere of this play. It is bound very well so this copy will be around for a very long time.

This story is set in Russia, 1905 and deals with many issues that are being dealt with still today. You will find people dealing with ethnicity issues, religious issues, interracial and traditional issues. Basically, although it is over fifty years old in Broadway production and over 100 in its setting, it still applies to many issues being dealt with today.

I found it to be a very humorous story. Many of the lines dealing with the big issues are played off for a laugh while still making a point. Tevye, the father, is stuck on traditions and wants everything done as it has been done as long as there has been traditions. His daughters have other ideas when it comes to marriage. They are not so certain they want to be married to whomever the matchmaker wants them to be married to. As the story unfolds, Tevye and others must decide if tradition is more important than happiness.

If you have never read Fiddler on the Roof, get a copy now and start reading. It is well worth it.

    Readings

I have taken a personal challenge to read a lot this year. Originally I said a book a week. I am averaging a week and a half per book. Not too shabby.
