Once we got through Makin Music we started chatting a lot on instant messenger. For you young whippersnappers, instant messenger was like texting but over the computer. We did this a lot. Kaycee even still has all of our old conversations saved in her email. (Sweet isn't it!)
We started hanging out a lot. Our first "date" was a church date. At Freed-Hardeman, that was pretty serious. It was also about your only option. We went to the Finger Church of Christ in Finger, Tn, a small community outside of Henderson. We had discussed going to Besso's afterwards for gelato but I had a problem. I was a broke college kid who couldn't afford to buy myself any gelato, much less take a girl on a date there!
We pulled back into the dorm parking lot and had a slight moment of awkwardness. Kaycee asked if I still wanted to go to Besso's. I then had to tell her that I had no money. She said she would pay and I fired up the old Topaz and headed to Besso's!
We went on a few more dates and I had really started to like her a lot. One night we sat on a swing on campus for over four hours talking. It was a great night. We had many mutual friends which makes it even crazier that we never met before. One night I was headed out to pick up Kaycee and go out Chickasaw. (That is the State Park a few miles from campus. It's the other place you can go on a date.) We had not "officially" started dating yet and as I walked past a mutual friend of ours she asked "Are you going to see your girlfriend?" In a very giddy and girly voice. I just smiled and walked on. Blushing of course.
We got to Chickasaw and found a nice spot on one of the docks overlooking the lake. We sat there for quite a while and talked about everything. This would become one of our favorite things to do. At some point during the course of the night I said, "I guess I can tell her when I get back that I saw my girlfriend" (more blushing). Kaycee said "Does that mean you want me to be your girlfriend?!" (Even more blushing)
And that is how my wife became my girlfriend.
