We spent a lot of time together while Kaycee was in Pensacola. I would go pick her up in the mornings and drop her off at Ms. Frankie’s house at night. I honestly don’t remember how many days we did this, but each one was great. I spent most of my time trying to figure out the perfect way to ask her to marry me. I know that the “How to be extremely romantic” manual says every detail must be planned out weeks ahead of time, but I didn’t read that manual.
One day we were heading out to the beach. It was then, and still is our happy place to go to Pensacola Beach. We have a certain spot that we call “Our Spot.” It is nothing fancy, it is just a place we like to go and there are not a lot of people around. After I picked her up I drove back by the apartment at the church building where I was staying. I grabbed my camera bag and ran back in. While inside I hid the ring in the bag and went back out to the car. She thought it was weird that I took the camera bag in, but didn’t say anything about it.
We got to the beach and played in the Gulf for a while. It was a beautiful day. We sat and talked for a while and then got in the water. Then sat and talked more and back in the water. One of the times we were in the water I went back to the shore. While I was there I grabbed the ring and headed back into the water. (Insert your “are you crazy! line here for taking the ring into the Gulf of Mexico.)
I had the ring in my hand clinched into the tightest fist I could manage. There were marks on my palm from my fingernails! I went past Kaycee and told her to chase me. She then gave me the “are you kidding me” look but I made her come out to where I was. When she got to me I was on one knee. She couldn’t tell because if you have ever been to the Gulf you know the water is not exactly clear…
She finally made it to me and I said “I love you, will you marry me.” She didn’t respond at first. We had talked about it a lot and I had asked her a few times to marry me but never in the official sense. I then realized that I still had my hand clinched so tight that you could not see the ring. I let loose with my hand enough to let the ring show through and she finally said yes!
It was August 9 or 8/9. Later in the story (Spoiler alert!) we get married. Our anniversary is June 7, 2008 or 6/7/8. I like to think I planned it out to make these dates easier to remember but I didn’t. We are just that awesome.
To be continued.
